Aquaman

Episode two of the podcast is in the books and this time we got to see a movie that we both loved. Aquaman was a big dumb popcorn movie that was equal parts action and comedy, but 100% fun throughout. Jason Momoa, Amber Herd, Patrick Wilson, and Willem Dafoe star in DC’s best film to this point (that’s right, the guy who talks to fish somehow has the best movie in this cinematic universe, go figure). The movie surprisingly tells the story of Arthur Curry’s reluctant struggle to take his rightful place as the king of Atlantis in a very well done way. Jason Momoa is an absolute megastar and has some serious blockbusters in him if a studio wants to put him as their leading man. The movie’s visuals are outstanding and James Wan showed that there is a way to shoot underwater scenes without making everything look sloppy.

This movie definitely isn’t without some problems though. There are a few scenes where the dialog is clunky and it can take you out of the movie. The plot is also a little hard to follow at times due to the fact that they’re trying to get in so much information and story into one film. Take for example that there were maybe four main villains (Ocean Master, Black Manta, Karathen, and a political power struggle). With so much going on, you’re forced to split your attention up several ways at once.

With all that said, Aquaman could not have exceed my expectations more. DC hasn’t been firing on all cylinders with their latest movies and this had the potential to be a real mess. James Wan knew what he wanted this movie to be, and with the help of Jason Momoa, he nailed it visually and tonally. I can’t recommend seeing this movie enough if you want to see some fun action played out in a stunning setting.
