Escape Room

There are movies that make you really think about your existence and see the world in a different light. On the other hand, there are also movies that allow you to just turn off your brain and watch. Escape Room would be the latter of the two. This movie follows the formula created by the Saw franchise of giving the viewer a firsthand look at creative, and sometimes graphic, death scene after death scene. There is usually a confusing plot (trying to) hold together the movie, a couple of twists, and an ambiguous ending that leaves it open for a sequel. This movie had all of that, but ended up being very enjoyable in its own way.

Escape Room’s plot is basically what would happen if one of these rooms was designed it for a more sinister reason. Six strangers are given an invitation to participate in an escape room with the chance of winning $10,000. The escape room starts off normal enough, but it eventually turns into a game of life or death when the participants realize that the dangers in the rooms are real. One by one, our main characters are killed off in rooms that are designed to represent a traumatic experience from one of their lives. It it finally revealed that all six individuals were the lone survivor of a tragedy and now the “game master” is trying to find out who is the survivor of all survivors. After battling through the six rooms, two contestants survive, but find no trace of the game when returning to the building with the police. The two survivors plan to take down the organization creating these deadly games, when it is revealed that the same organization is planning another escape room on their flight out to stop them.

I genuinely enjoyed this movie and had a lot of fun throughout. It wasn’t the hardest plot twist to predict and the movie definitely had its shortcomings, but it is well worth a watch because of the different rooms and comedy woven into it. Horror movies can be complete busts, but Escape Room was a solid way to spend an hour and a half.
