Holmes & Watson

Welcome everyone to the Bud Lights, Camera, Action...blog. With Anthony and I making a conscious effort to cut down on podcast times, I figured a blog would be a way to put more thought out ideas on paper. As we’re recording, things are bound to be forgotten, left out, or cut for one reason or another. These blogs should hopefully be a way to expand on our original ideas, while also giving us the opportunity to write about movies that won’t be on the podcast. So without further ado, this is Holmes & Watson...

Holmes & Watson, simply put, is not a good movie. I had a lot of problems with this movie, but my biggest was that it didn’t seem like the people involved even cared themselves. The writing was lazy, the acting was (mostly) mailed in, and the production was just subpar. There are actually parts of this movie where the actor’s mouths don’t even match the dialogue. If the team involved in actually MAKING the movie doesn’t care about their product, then why should I?

However (Steven A. Smith voice), with all of these negatives, Holmes & Watson still managed to make me laugh at times. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have undeniable chemistry (see Step Brothers & Talledega Nights) and they definitely know what their target audience is, but they were sort of just all over the place with this one. With jokes ranging from pissing yourself and throwing up to “Make America Great Again” sight gags, this movie really wasn’t sure what kind of humor it wanted to attempt. As I said before, Ferrell and Reilly did have some good back and forth that saved me from hating this entirely, but at the end of the day the comedy was just a little off the mark.

Holmes & Watson isn’t Ferrell & Reilly at their best (I argued that John C. Reilly is above this kind of stuff on the pod) and I think the audience reaction has shown that pretty clearly. Sony got such terrible screening reviews that they tried to sell this movie to Netflix and they passed. That’s right, Netflix, you know the streaming platform that will literally play anything. There were actually massive walkouts during the movie’s opening week as well. Don’t waste your time with this one, it leaves you wanting SO much more from two great comedic actors and its super unfulfilling.
