Mary Poppins Returns

Another week, another movie blog. This one left me quite confused since it was a Disney movie and that company rarely misses. Mary Poppins Returns was a movie that people, like myself, were very excited for. However, even with all of the great reviews that is it getting, this movie just didn’t land for me.

An obvious sequel to Mary Poppins, Mary Poppins Returns follows the lead child protagonists all grown up with children of their own now. The basic storyline is that a family is going to lose their home after the mother/wife dies and the bank is collecting on an overdue loan. The children meet Mary Poppins and embark on a wild adventure to try and save their home. My big problem with this movie was that so much of it happens for no reason. The characters are constantly working towards something that has no payoff whatsoever. Mary Poppins, played by Emily Blunt, was absolutely fantastic in this role, but I had a hard time enjoying anything else. The songs were subpar by Disney standards and the typical magic a movie like this brings just wasn’t there. I can very much admit that I’m probably not the intended audience for Mary Poppins Returns, but I’ve loved recent movies with a similar dynamic of being pushed along with song and dance (The Greatest Showman, Mama Mia! Here We Go Again.) This movie was thought of as a possible Oscar dark horse (it isn’t anymore), but Emily Blunt was totally snubbed by not receiving a nomination for her performance.

PS: Can we please stop making Lin-Manuel Miranda a thing? It’s over with people, his shtick is over with and it’s no longer fun.
